Enhancing Your Sexual Relationship

“Many people are expecting to have high desire for whatever forms of sex are available. There is little questioning of which kinds of sex one is expected to desire. It has been a quantity-framed discourse. The reality is that those who refuse to settle are creating the foundations for only having sex worth wanting.”

Kleinplatz, P.J. (2016). Optimal erotic intimacy: Lessons from great lovers. In Levine, S., Althof, S., & Risen, C. (Eds.) Handbook of Clinical Sexuality for Mental Health Professionals (3rd Ed). (pp 318-330). New York: Routledge.

WHY: Would you and your partner like to improve your sex life?

WHO/WHAT: Couples with low/no sexual desire or frequency, and/or desire discrepancy (in which one partner is more interested in sex than the other) who are interested in enhancing their sexual relationship and ready to embark on a journey to enhance their sexual experiences and relationships. The process will involve group therapy over 16 hours. Limit of 4 to 6 couples/group. All group therapy during the pandemic will be held virtually.
The content of the group is based on the work of the Optimal Sexual Experiences Research Team of the University of Ottawa, including elements and facilitating factors of optimal sexual intimacy as well as research on group couples therapy. The groups are part of a research project studying the effectiveness of group therapy in enhancing sexual relationships. Your participation in the research project (which is optional) consists of completing questionnaires at multiple time points.

Dr. Rami Nijjar

Dr. Rami Nijjar is a Clinical Psychologist whose aim is to make sex and relationship therapy accessible and effective for those experiencing barriers to attachment, vulnerability, and eroticism. She completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Concordia University and subsequently worked with researcher and clinical psychologist Lori Brotto at the Sexual Medicine Department of the Vancouver General Hospital, running groups for women with vulvodynia, women struggling with low desire, and men approaching intimacy post prostate cancer treatment. During this time, she also became a Certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher through the UCSD School of Medicine. While treating a myriad of so-called sexual dysfunctions, Rami began to notice ways that some of her clients were able to find not only relief but transformative change through the crucible of relationships and sex, while other clients continued to suffer. Shame, trauma, and marginalization appeared to be the distinguishing factor. Rami has pioneered an approach of applying Mindful Self-Compassion to the internalized shame that often gets in the way of fulfilling relationships and authentic authentic self-expression. Resilience Psychotherapy, a clinic operating out of Montreal and Vancouver, was founded and now directed by Dr. Rami in order to train therapists and offer this approach to clients across British Columbia and Quebec.

“Mediocre sex and low desire go hand in hand; the expectation that the ensuing sex will be lackluster leads, at best, to lowered arousal to be followed by minimal satisfaction and thus creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. Correspondingly, disappointing sex engenders trepidation for the next such experience. That is, a direct consequence of engaging in sexual activities without desire regularly is the acceleration and exacerbation of dread-full sex.”

Charest, M., & Kleinplatz, P. J. (2018). A review of recent innovations in the treatment of low desire. Current Sexual Health Reports, 1-6.
